Baishizhou Urban Renewal

#Baishizhou Urban Renewal Public Art Masterplan

SHENZHEN, CHINA

Baishizhou is situated slightly east of the center of Nanshan District in Shenzhen, with the high-tech industrial park adjacent to its west. To the east are tourist attractions such as Window of the World and Happy Valley. Towards the south thrives the bustling Hohai area. This area, covering only 0.6 square kilometres, is home to over 150,000 residents. Before its transformation, it was Shenzhen’s most renowned “urban village,” where many embarked on their Shenzhen dream with boundless aspirations and hopes.

Given the rich backdrop imbued with memories for many, LVGEM Group, the developer, took into account the integration of public art in their overall design masterplan for Baishizhou. They invited UAP to create the masterplan for public art across the entire Baishizhou development.

Before initiating the project, UAP conducted several site visits to enhance site reconnaissance. Over the span of nearly two years during the project, as the entire site was undergoing redevelopment, the UAP team also referenced historical photo documentation archives collected by the client, gaining deeper insights into the past of Baishizhou. Considering the project’s overall “boundless” positioning, the UAP team aimed to infuse diverse artistic forms into the site. Under the overarching theme of “Boundless Creativity,” UAP proposed three sub-themes: “Crossover Lab,” “A Movable Feast,” and “Weaving Time & Space,” corresponding respectively to commercial spaces, public areas, and residential spaces within the area.
