PERTH, AUSTRALIA

Tim Meakins is an artist and designer from Perth, Western Australia, known for working across various mediums such as sculpture, painting, print, animation, and publishing. His art draws inspiration from computer graphics, operating systems, and cartoons, blending these elements to explore the shifting boundaries between digital and analogue realities. Meakins investigates the limits of the human body through exaggerated, cartoon-like figures, often focusing on themes of strength and physicality by depicting muscular figures in poses that symbolise power and endurance.

Using virtual reality (VR), 3D modelling, and cast aluminium, Meakins created sculptures of his own body in uncomfortable, transitory postures. The positions convey deflation, compression, crumpling, and strain—contrasting the strength of their muscled forms with an underlying fragility. With a background in fitness, where repetitive movement and weight-bearing exercises are used to build physical strength, Meakins challenges the notion of the body as a machine. Instead, he focuses on moments of collapse, questioning how the body is defined by weakness as much as by strength.

Meakins spent time at our Brisbane workshop to create his first cast artwork. During his time here, he observed the entire process, from initial 3D renders to the final fabrication of the sculptures. This collaboration helped create Body Mould, allowing Meakins to experiment with new techniques and materials. We are proud to have supported him in bringing his vision to life. You can check these artworks out at his Sweet Peas Art Gallery exhibition in Boorloo (Perth), Australia.

Some photos from my time at UAP last month working on castings for Body Mould. Was extremely fulfilling to be on site working with the whole team and understanding the process from start to finish. It all feels very different to what I usually make which is a little scary but very exciting and hope people like it.
