#Fabric of Life

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA, USA

Yanoe Zoueh, the dynamic duo of Ryan Yanoe Sarfati and Eric Zoueh Skotnes, are trailblazers in large-scale public art. With roots in graffiti culture, they have evolved into artists who create vibrant and impactful murals that reflect deep cultural and historical themes. Their work, often focused on reimagining urban spaces, showcases a strong commitment to community, infusing cityscapes across the nation with powerful narratives and bold colors.

Their mural, The Fabric of Life, is a profound representation of the collective history of San Juan Bautista. This artwork, a result of the collective efforts of over 200 local residents, takes viewers on a journey from the flat surfaces of traditional murals to a dynamic, three-dimensional expression, symbolizing the depth and complexity of the community it represents. By weaving together these individual stories, the mural celebrates the town's diversity, shared identity, and resilience, making it an aesthetic triumph and a cultural landmark for the community.

UAP played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life, ensuring the transition from the mural's 2D design to its 3D expression was technically flawless. This collaboration involved integrating a two-part cast aluminium sculpture that extends the mural's colours and flow beyond the wall, transforming the Washington Street underpass into a vibrant and engaging space. The artwork, part of the Clean California Initiative, stands as a powerful symbol of renewal and resilience, showing how public art can revitalize neglected spaces and serve as a testament to creativity and community spirit.

We connected to everyone we could and visited El Teatro to get a feel for the town,” Sarfati said. “We wanted to know what they thought represented San Juan, then compiled it and sat down with it. And this is kind of where we landed.
