#Papillon

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Nike Savvas was commissioned by the Barangaroo Delivery Authority to create a temporary artwork installed at Exchange Square, Barangaroo South as part of a Temporary Art Initiative.

Savvas’ work titled Papillon (French for butterfly), is a suspended installation that showcases the artists signature use of colour and form to create transformational and immersive experiences. Produced in collaboration with UAP, the work is comprised of colourful, glossy plastic ribbons (bespoke bunting) that are suspended overhead and react to surrounding environmental conditions. On exhibition November to December of 2017, the work offered a captivating multi-sensory experience designed to mesmerize, transport and transform the viewer.

The work Papillon…is many things at once — a celebration, a lament to freedom, a sensual revelry, a protest, homage to Joseph Albers, Pointillism, Op art, Pop, Kinetic and Abstract art. Papillon references painting, both past and present. It is at once a flag, a target, a sign and a butterfly
