French artist Bertrand Lavier explores the relationship between painting and sculpture, representation and abstraction, life and art.
In 2022 Lavier transformed the Fosun Foundation Shanghai’s gallery space into a real-life Disney comic strip for his solo exhibition. Inspired by a 1977 comic strip in which Micky Mouse visits a modern art exhibition, Lavier appropriated fictional elements from the comic strip and transformed them into independent objects within the gallery space to re-create Micky Mouse’s viewing experience.
Featured within the exhibition were six abstract sculptural editions that were created in close collaboration with the artist, Kamel Mennour Gallery and UAP’s Shanghai team. Made using a fibre glass steel structure the bold sculptures were finished in a bright paint and gloss finish.
There’s a widespread idea that Art is Life. Not to my mind. I feel that Art is something just next to Life: Art proves that Life is not enough. That’s why I use objects as servers.
