#Water Spirit

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Thai-born Australian artist Vipoo Srivilasa has established himself as a leading figure in contemporary ceramics, and he is celebrated for infusing his art with themes of queerness, migration, and spirituality. Over the past two decades, Srivilasa has created works that blend joy, nostalgia, and hope while exploring the challenges of isolation and identity. His creations stand out for their accessible and captivating aesthetic, allowing complex narratives to resonate universally. With roots that span Australia and Thailand, Srivilasa's artistry bridges cultures, drawing from his rich heritage and lived experiences.

One of his most awe-inspiring works, Water Spirit, is a testament to this blend of personal and cultural storytelling. Standing at 3.2 meters and weighing approximately 300 kilograms, the sculpture is cast in aluminium and coated in a pristine white finish. The intricate design features a mosaic-tiled planter box, which creates the illusion of the sculpture floating on water, embodying water's protective and unifying power. This choice symbolizes the vital role water plays in connecting communities, a nod to the river systems of Birrarung Marr and their deep cultural significance. The sculpture evokes calm and reverence, inviting viewers to reflect on themes of purity, peace, and unity. Water spirits, revered across many cultures, are seen as guides and protectors, making this artwork both a celebration and a meditation on the power of community.

From initial conceptualization to its installation at Home Docklands in Melbourne, the process was a culmination of artistic vision and expert craftsmanship. Our Brisbane team scanned and enlarged Srivilasa's original maquette to create a milled foam pattern for casting. The sculpture was then meticulously fabricated and painted to achieve its seamless, ethereal appearance. Srivilasa's hands-on involvement, especially during his visit to our workshop, ensured that each element was true to his vision, marked by attention to detail and an unwavering dedication to quality.
