Woody De Othello

#'Involution', 'Capacity', 'inner knowing'
LOS ANGELES, USA
Woody De Othello is an Oakland-based artist known for his transformative approach to everyday objects. Working primarily with clay and bronze, he reimagines mundane items—such as clocks, telephones, and fans—into anthropomorphic sculptures that delve into the psychological and emotional realms.
In his exhibition "Tuning the Dial" at Karma Gallery in Los Angeles, Othello presented an immersive installation that explored the unseen frequencies of human emotions. The exhibition showcased a harmonious blend of ceramic and bronze sculptures, works on paper, ambient lighting, and a commissioned soundscape titled "Vire Sab," which means "turning sand" in Haitian Creole, created by his frequent collaborator Cheflee. This multisensory environment invites visitors to recalibrate their internal emotional compass, engaging both the body and mind.
To bring this ambitious project to life, high-resolution scans of Othello's designs were refined to create PMMA patterns and raw casts. These components were then sent to The Big New (TBN) in Los Angeles, promoting close collaboration during the finishing and patination phases. This method allowed the artist to remain closely involved in the final production stages while reducing shipping costs. The resulting silicon bronze sculptures, adorned with a striking red and black patina, seamlessly integrate into Othello's multisensory landscape.
