Grace Tan is a renowned interdisciplinary artist based in Singapore, celebrated for her innovative approach to materials, geometry, and construction. Her work often explores the intricate connections between structure and perception, engaging viewers in a dialogue about form and meaning. One of her notable projects is Mater, a commemorative sculpture created for Yale-NUS College. Known for her ability to provoke thought and introspection through art, Tan was the ideal choice to represent the spirit and legacy of this pioneering liberal arts institution.
The concept behind Mater is deeply rooted in the idea of personal reflection and growth. Described as "a cube with an illusionary square," the sculpture serves as a physical embodiment of Yale-NUS College's ethos. Strategically positioned to frame the Library and Arts Centre—two key spaces that resonate with the college community—the artwork invites viewers to engage in a contemplative dialogue. Tan designed Mater to evoke questions rather than offer definitive answers, prompting reflections such as "What do I see?" and "What does this mean to me?" This open-ended engagement fosters a more personal connection to the sculpture, making it a meaningful tribute to the values and journey of Yale-NUS College.
The significance of Mater extends beyond its form, as the material and evolving colour palette play crucial roles in the artwork's symbolism. Crafted from Corten steel, the sculpture undergoes a natural transformation over time. This weathering process, which gradually shifts the steel from grey to rich hues of brown and purple, mirrors the growth and adaptation that are integral to the educational experience at Yale-NUS. The evolving patina symbolizes strengthening bonds within the community and the passage of time, reinforcing the themes of durability and resilience central to the artwork.
The fabrication of Mater was a meticulous process overseen by Grace Tan in collaboration with the skilled teams at UAP's Shanghai workshop. The choice of Corten steel, selected for its environmental sensitivity and enduring qualities, required specialized techniques to ensure the sculpture's longevity. UAP's Shanghai team employed unique welding methods and developed custom moulds to assemble the geometric modules, preventing thermal deformation during the process. Additionally, the team devised a segment breakdown solution to facilitate logistics and site access, ensuring the seamless installation of the sculpture on the Yale-NUS campus.
