Debbie Lawson

London-based artist Debbie Lawson’s work takes the form of a series of episodes that invites the viewer on a journey through the landscape of the domestic interior, where popular narratives and personal histories are intertwined so that the imaginary and material reality seem inseparable.

In 2021 Lawson created The Gathering of the Clans for Black Star Pastry’s flagship Shanghai location. Comprising of three stags, each of whom emerge from a Persian-style rug, this work is a continuation of Lawson’s series of covered sculptures depicting flora and fauna. Dispersed throughout the store, both camouflaged and enhanced by their carpeted exterior, they hide and re-appear like animals in the woods depending on the viewer’s orientation.

UAP’s Shanghai team worked closely with Lawson and Black Star Pastry’s CEO Louis Li to assist in delivering this incredible work.
