#Thousands of Mountains

SHENZHEN, CHINA

Thousands of Mountains by Huang Zhiyang is comprised of five carved granite sculptures dotted throughout the ecological rain garden. Echoing the garden’s landscape environment, the shape of the works reference rocks, water, and biological forms, reflecting the cosmology of animism in Chinese philosophy. Huang created small handmade clay models for each piece, which were then converted into upscaled granite forms and carved by the artist’s stonemason to achieve the distinctive stripe pattern. The smooth shapes with their detailed surface provide a friendly, calming and grounding presence within the rain garden.

UAP’s Shanghai team assisted the artist throughout the design development, as well as coordinating the tailored fabrication and installation approach for Thousands of Mountains.

The 1.48 million square meter centre is set to become the largest of its kind in the world. Incorporated within and throughout the Centre are ten site-specific artworks from seven different artists, each of which were selected following a comprehensive public art master plan created by UAP’s Shanghai team.
