#Trees (System)

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Caroline Rothwell is an Australian artist known for her explorative approach to sculpture, where she examines the intricate connections between humanity and nature. Her work highlights the subtle interactions between the natural world and human infrastructure, inviting viewers to reconsider their relationship with the environment. Rothwell's art questions and reinterprets how we see the world, focusing on the transmutation of materials and the balance of systems in nature and urban landscapes.

Our team developed the curatorial vision for 'Trees (System)' in collaboration with Dedico and sponsored by JDH Capital Pty Ltd. The project sought to create a public artwork that would transform the space at 100 Bayswater Road in Rushcutters Bay. The curatorial team envisioned a work that not only pays tribute to the local ecosystem but also creates a dialogue between nature's resilience and the dynamics of urban infrastructure. The resulting artwork captures the vibrant spirit of Rushcutters Bay—a landscape rich with history, culture, and nature—offering a "panorama" of the past, present, and future.

'Trees (System)' symbolises interconnected growth. It has two cast bronze tree sculptures linked by linear systems that support a striking leek orchid. The vertical branching forms evoke a sense of groundedness, integrating with the surrounding urban environment. The cast bronze trees have a verdigris patina that gives them an aged, blue-green appearance, while the orchid features a carbon graphite patina. Over time, the artwork will naturally oxidise, deepening in character in line with the artist's intent. The piece is 4.1 meters tall, nearly 5 meters wide, and mounted on a subsurface footing, with bronze elements carefully designed for structural integrity.

Our Brisbane team guided the public art planning process and worked closely with Rothwell throughout the artwork's creation. Our fabrication experts executed the detailed bronze casting, ensuring that Rothwell's unique casting technique was fully realised. This collaboration resulted in a beautiful, site-specific artwork that resonates with both the local community and broader audiences. It offers a space for reflection and connection amidst the city's vibrancy.
