James & Eleanor Avery
The collaborative duo of James and Eleanor Avery have been working together on large scale sculpture and installation projects since 2004. Despite undertaking thorough research into site specifics and historical idiosyncrasies, they play off humour and the absurd, with finished pieces revealing a low-tech craft approach despite high-end fabrication methods. Between fiction and documentary, replicated and real, their work displays a sense of postmodern irony with pop culture references that touch on power structures, hierarchies and value systems.
Having undertaken numerous international residencies, the Averys have a strong presence both abroad and at home in South East Queensland. Most recently they have produced permanent sculptures for Ryde Garden in Sydney and Fish Lane in South Brisbane, and a temporary commission for the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens during the 2018 Commonwealth Games celebrations.
