Seymour Lipton

Designed by architect Eero Saarinen, IBM’s Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, stands as an icon of modernist architecture. At its entrance, two commanding sculptures by renowned artist Seymour Lipton, Argonaut I and Argonaut II, have greeted visitors for decades. Lipton, known for his expressive use of metal and brazing techniques, often explored themes of transformation and resilience in his work—qualities that resonated deeply with the pioneering spirit of the research centre.

Over time, exposure to the elements altered the sculptures’ surfaces, diminishing their original appearance. Early photographs revealed that the works were once positioned closer together and featured a golden-hued finish, likely achieved through Lipton’s innovative use of Monel metal, bronze, and high-copper brazing techniques. These materials, chosen for their durability and dynamic colouration, contributed to the sculptures’ striking presence within the architectural ensemble.

To restore these artworks, UAP Preservation worked on a meticulous conservation process rooted in historical research and material analysis. Our team consulted archives, examined past documentation, and conducted material testing. We carefully removed surface buildup using a gentle blasting method, revealing the base metals and allowing for an informed restoration approach. Since Monel and nickel-silver brazing do not patinate like traditional bronze, we employed specialized metal finishing techniques before applying a protective coat of Renaissance Wax to preserve their renewed brilliance.

By revitalizing Argonaut I and Argonaut II, UAP Preservation has kept Lipton’s artistic legacy and ensured these sculptures stand as symbols of innovation and artistry. A comprehensive treatment report has been provided to IBM, offering guidance on their long-term care, so that these works may inspire generations to come.
