#Black-Faced Spoonbill
SHENZHEN, CHINA
Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman captivates the public imagination by transforming everyday objects into monumental installations that invite audiences to experience art in new ways. Known for his playful yet thought-provoking approach, Hofman turns ordinary subjects into larger-than-life sculptures that radiate familiarity and humour. His Selfie Panda (2020), a colossal panda designed to "take selfies" with its audience, brought joy and whimsy, blending intimacy with grandeur. By working on such an impressive scale, Hofman captures the viewer's attention and encourages a closer connection to his themes through redefined familiar objects.
One of his most impactful creations is the Black-faced Spoonbill, a massive sculpture commissioned for the Bantian Vanke Mall in Shenzhen. This artwork serves as a poignant reminder of Shenzhen's commitment to preserving wildlife, as the region is a crucial stopover for migratory birds—hosting one-fifth of China's bird species. The spoonbill, a symbol of endangered biodiversity, becomes a powerful figure for the necessity of coexistence between urban growth and ecological conservation. Standing tall and strong, the bird conveys a message of transcendence and interconnectedness, urging people to see beyond personal boundaries and adopt a collective consciousness for environmental preservation. With its size and presence, the "Black-faced Spoonbill" underscores Shenzhen's identity as a rapidly growing urban space still rooted in its natural heritage.
Our Shanghai team helped bring Hofman's vision to life. Its impressive dimensions—10.5 meters tall, 16.8 meters long, and 5.1 meters wide—posed a series of logistical challenges, from the initial concept design to the final touches. Constructed using robust materials like Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics (FRP), carbon steel, and stainless steel, the sculpture required advanced welding techniques, careful attention to detail in the finishing department, and precise planning for its seamless integration within the mall's space. Each phase, from technical planning to the final installation, highlighted the collaboration between Hofman and UAP Shanghai, who worked together to ensure that every element aligned with the city's unique identity and commitment to nature. The result is a stunning, giant bird that echoes the city's deep connection to its environment and inspires viewers to consider humanity's relationship with nature.
At the beginning of the project, I was attracted by the beautiful and unique appearance of the endangered Platalea minor, I discovered that it has unique migratory habits. The Platalea minor comes to Shenzhen during the winter, which fits in well with Shenzhen as a city of immigrants, welcoming people and businesses from all over the world to set up roots here. This led me to create this unique and deeply meaningful work.
